Monte Smith, Owner and Operator

Monte is a dog lover, a baseball fan and an outdoor enthusiast, but you already knew that. What you probably can't tell from his photo is that he has over 30 years experience in the construction business - more specifically, exterior home finishing. In 1992, Monte started a stucco contracting business in Edmonton, Alberta, which incorporated other forms of exterior finishing, such as vinyl, Hardie and cultured stone. He moved to the Kootenays in 2009 to work for Ostash Exteriors before starting Brown Dog Contracting in 2015. Drive through the Southview area, Highlands or Mount Royal and you'll see a great deal of his handiwork.

Now, at the helm of Brown Dog Contracting Ltd., he looks forward to meeting you and putting these years of experience to work on your project.

What people are saying...

Monte totally transformed my bathroom. My request was short notice and urgent and he was prepared and got the job done...

“We had some expert help in Monte Smith, who provided quiet, calm and clean energy to the project. He provided all I could ask for and I would recommend him to anyone who requires trusted home renovation skills.”
— Darcie Mennie, Cranbrook Homeowner
We are very impressed with Monte’s work. He was easy to collaborate with in order to finalize our renovation plan and very patient with us when we made some minor changes. His quote was reasonable and came in on budget. He finished the work quickly and cleaned up nicely before he left at the end of each day and overall Monte was very easy and enjoyable to work with.
— Carleen Hamdon, Cranbrook Homeowner

What's in a name?

chocolate lab cranbrook

Why do we call our company Brown Dog Contracting? Because of Bo. A constant companion to owner and operator Monte Smith for 11 years, Bo was often spotted on the job site. In fact, when Monte first moved to Cranbrook, he became known as the "the guy with the Brown Dog." Driven by his need to fetch, Bo did get Monte into trouble from time to time with his incredible knack for finding tennis balls.

Nevertheless, he was a big part of our story and after he passed in 2015, it was only natural for our business to be named after him.

Today, one of the great joys of our work is getting to meet a variety of yard guards. We, of course, have a soft spot for Labs.
